Things to know before you go snowboarding

By LeeMoio

Snowboarding is a thrilling and exciting winter sport but it can also be dangerous if you’re not prepared for it. Before hitting the slopes, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the basics of snowboarding, including the equipment you’ll need, the proper techniques for turning and stopping, and the risks associated with the sport.

Know Before You Go Snowboarding

Here are some things to know before you go snowboarding:

1. Buying the right equipment:

The most important piece of equipment for snowboarding is the board itself. When choosing a board, consider your skill level, weight, and riding style. It’s also important to have the right boots and bindings, which should fit comfortably and securely. In addition to the board, you’ll also need a snowboarding jacket, pants, gloves or mittens, goggles, and a helmet.

Even the most basic equipment requires a certain amount of skill for proper usage. Don’t try to take the advanced slopes if you’ve never ridden the board before as it will take time for you to familiarize yourself with how the board works.

2. Learning the basics:

Before hitting the slopes, it’s important to learn the basics of snowboarding. This includes proper stance, how to turn and stop, and how to control your speed. Many ski resorts offer lessons for beginners, which can be a great way to learn the basics and build confidence on the mountain.

3. Safety:

Snowboarding can be dangerous if you’re not properly prepared. It’s important to understand the risks associated with the sport, including the risk of injury from falls, collisions with other riders, and exposure to the elements. To minimize these risks, be sure to wear the proper safety gear, including a helmet, goggles, and gloves or mittens.

Every trail has its own path and sets of rules, so it is important to abide by them especially if you’re a beginner boarder. Always stay on the designated trails and try not to go on the trail alone if you can so that you’ll have someone to help you in case you lose control or get into an accident.

4. Fitness:

Snowboarding is a physically demanding sport, and the pros always make it look so easy but it takes a lot of effort to perform even the most basic tricks on a board. That’s why it’s important to be in good physical shape before hitting the slopes. Building up your cardiovascular fitness, strength, and flexibility can help you have a better experience and reduce the risk of injury.

Spending time lifting weights to build up some muscle is just as important as doing cardio on the treadmill so make sure you have a balanced fitness plan. Doing Yoga is also beneficial for snowboarding as it helps to improve your balance and flexibility, both of which are often needed while riding on the snowboard.

5. Understanding the mountain:

Before hitting the slopes, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the mountain. This includes understanding the layout of the trails, the difficulty level of each trail, and the location of ski patrol and first aid stations. It’s also important to be aware of the weather and snow conditions and to adjust your riding accordingly.

Ski resorts and popular destinations usually have ample fliers and leaflets that you can read. You can also look up online to watch videos of others attempting the slopes you plan to snowboard on so that you know what to expect.

6. Knowing the rules:

Every ski resort has its own set of rules, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with them before you hit the slopes. This includes rules about lift usage, trail etiquette, and safety protocols. Following these rules will help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone on the mountain.

7. Getting the right gear:

The key to a successful snowboarding experience is having the right gear. Boots, bindings, and boards are all important but don’t forget about the smaller stuff like gloves, goggles, and a helmet. Make sure you have all the necessary gear to ensure a comfortable and safe experience on the slopes.

One thing that’s often overlooked is sunscreen. Even if your entire body is covered with gear, your face will often be exposed to the elements. To ensure you remain at the peak of health, make sure to wear the right sunscreen whenever you’re out on the mountain.

8. Being prepared for the weather:

Snowboarding is a cold-weather sport and it’s important to be prepared for the elements. Layering is key and it’s important to have a waterproof and breathable jacket, pants, and gloves. Make sure you have a hat, neck warmer, and an extra pair of gloves or mittens in case of wet weather.

Always respect Mother Nature and watch the news forecast the night before. If it seems less than ideal weather for snowboarding, then consider waiting it out as bad weather can quickly turn nightmarish very quickly and you don’t want to be lost in a snowstorm somewhere on the mountain.

9. Picking the right slope:

Snowboarding is not a one-size-fits-all sport, and different slopes will appeal to different skill levels. Beginners should start on the easier slopes, while more advanced riders can tackle the more challenging terrain. Knowing your skill level and choosing the right slope will help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Only challenge yourself on the more difficult slopes when you feel ready to do so. Have an instructor or experienced friend riding alongside you to provide advice and be a source of help if you ever need it.

10. Staying hydrated and fed:

Snowboarding can be physically demanding and it’s important to stay hydrated and fed while on the mountain. Bring water and snacks to keep you going, and make sure you take breaks when you need them.

Time passes by very quickly when you’re having fun and it can be easy to forget to eat when you’re facing the slopes. Always remember you will need energy if you want to complete the trail.
